HOW BACCARAT CARDS AND POINTS WORK

Points calculation in Baccarat is different from most games. A unique rule in Baccarat is that nine is the highest score, and the value of a hand can’t be higher. Here’s how the cards work and how the points add up:

ADDING UP POINTS

Once the points value reaches a double digit, the second digit will automatically become the value of the hand.

With this rule, for example, 10 is worth 0, 11 is worth 1, 12 is worth 2, and so on. After the total points reach 10, simply drop the first digit and that’s the score of the hand.

So a hand of a 9 and 6, which adds up to 15, becomes a 5-point hand. Only a bet on the hand that’s closest to 9 will win.

How to Play

To begin the game, players simply must walk up to a Baccarat table and place a bet on either of the three outcomes: your hand winning, the banker’s hand wining, or a tie.

Player

If you bet on your hand winning and win, you will receive a payout of 1:1. The house has a 1.24% edge over the player.

Banker

If you bet on the Banker’s hand wining and win, you will receive a payout of 1:1. You will, however, have to pay the house a 5% commission on your winnings from the Banker’s hands. The house has a 1.06% edge over the player.

Tie

If you bet on a tie and win, you will receive a payout of 8:1 (sometimes 9:1) The house, however, has a 14.36% edge over the player. When bets are made, the dealer will draw 2 or 3 cards for the player’s and Banker’s hand. The closest hand to 9 wins.

 If a hand exceeds 10, 10 is then subtracted from the hand. For example, a hand of 8 and 5 is 3 (13-10). Neither the Dealer nor the player decide if a third card is drawn. Instead, the rules of Baccarat determine this, as illustrated by the chart below.

Steps to play Baccarat

1.Start with a game plan; set a budget in advance and stick to it.

2. Know that you can bet on either of two hands. One is the Banker’s hand, the other is the Player’s hand. A player may bet on either hand. Bets must be placed on either the Player or Banker before cards are dealt

3. Know how cards are dealt; in ordinary play, a total of two cards are dealt for each of the Banker’s and the Player’s hands. Learn when a third card will be drawn.

4. Announce the point total of both sets of cards. Understand the “natural” win. If in the first two cards dealt, the point total is 8 or 9 for either the Player or the Banker, this is called a natural win and the game is over. Bets that have already been placed are cashed out.

5. Once all cards are dealt, calculate the winning hand. The winning hand is that which totals closer to 9. In the event of a tie, neither hand wins or loses. Sometimes a commission is paid out of winnings when betting on the Banker’s hand.
